Lupita Nyong'o Announces Split From Selema Masekela
Lupita Nyong’o reveals her breakup from Selema Masekela in a heartfelt social media post. On Thursday (Oct. 19), the acclaimed actress shared a text slideshow detailing her current state of mind amid the split.
“There are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering,” begins the 40-year-old. “At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust…”
She continues to detail, “I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception.”
The Us star went on to elaborate on her decision to publicly speak about her romantic situation.
“I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, ‘Whatever, my life is better this way.’ But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love. And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass,” she details.
“Let’s face our pain so we don’t spread it.”
Nyong’o and Masekela met in 2016 on an airplane per Marie Claire. Masekela, a sports commentator, musician, and entrepreneur, questioned on social media, “Hypothetically speaking of course… let’s say you’re seated behind Lupita Nyong’o on an airplane, what would be your opening line… Anyone comes up with a good opener for me with Lupita Nyong’o, send em. Cause I’m really sittin’ right behind her on this flight. #stumped.”
Years later in December 2022, the couple shared photos on Instagram with matching outfits and purchased a $4 million Hollywood home soon after. Currently, all uploads of the pair have been archived or deleted from Nyong’o’s Instagram feed.
