Luka Doncic’s Identity
Doncic was born February 28 1999 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to Sasa Doncic, a basketball coach and former player and Mirjam Poterbin, an owner of beauty salons. His father is a Slovenian with Serbian ancestry from Kosovo, and his mother is a Slovenian.
In his youth, he participated in a variety of sports, including football, which he eventually gave up because he became too tall. He started playing organized basketball at a primary school in Ljubljana when he was seven years old.
In September 2011, at the under-14 Vasas Intesa Sanpaolo Cup in Budapest, Luka represented Olimpija where he was awarded the most valuable player (MVP) despite finishing as runners-up to FC Barcelona. Spanish club Real Madrid signed Doncic on loan for the Minicopa Endesa, an under-14 club championship in February 2012
At the age of 13, Doni signed a five-year deal with Real Madrid in September 2012 and instantly made an impression on the under-16 squad under coach Paco Redondo. He relocated to Madrid, where he lived with basketball and football prospects. Doni led Real Madrid to victory in the Minicopa Endesa in February 2013 with an average of 24.5 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 6 steals per game.
Doncic’s Professional Career
Doni made his Liga ACB debut on April 30, 2015, for Real Madrid against Unicaja, making his lone three-point shot in less than two minutes of action. He was the third-youngest league debutant ever at 16 years, 2 months, and 2 days old, behind only Ricky Rubio and ngel Rebolo. He was also the youngest player to ever represent Real Madrid in the ACB.
Doni said on September 22, 2016, that he would play for the senior men’s Slovenian national team for the remainder of his athletic career. He had previously been connected to Spain and Serbia, among other national teams. Goran Dragi, a friend and mentor who he first met when he was seven years old, ended up being his roommate on the national team.
On June 21, 2018 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks selected Doni with the third overall choice. In return for Trae Young’s draft rights and a 2019 protected first-round choice, he was later dealt to the Dallas Mavericks. On July 9, 2018, he committed to the Mavericks under a rookie deal.
